Powers of attorney, in plain English.
A lasting power of attorney, an LPA, lets people you choose make decisions for you if illness, injury or age means you cannot make them yourself. You make it while you still have capacity, which means you can understand and make your own decisions. It is only used if it is needed.
There are two kinds. A property and financial affairs LPA covers money, bills, bank accounts and your home. A health and welfare LPA covers medical treatment, care and where you live. Most people make both.
Without an LPA your family cannot simply step in. They have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a deputy, which takes months and costs more. Aaron drafts the documents, acts as certificate provider (the independent person who confirms you understand them and are not under pressure), and registers them with the Office of the Public Guardian as part of the fixed fee.
