About Old Malton

What Old Malton is like.

Around St Mary's Priory Church, Eden Camp, the River Derwent and the B1257.

Old Malton is the village where Malton began, about a mile north-east of the present town centre. St Mary's Priory Church began as a priory of the Gilbertines, an order found only in England. It is still used for worship. The old grammar school, founded by Archbishop Holgate, is now two private houses. Eden Camp, a Second World War museum in a former prisoner-of-war camp, is in the village too.

The legal work that usually comes up

Some Old Malton houses have stayed in one family for generations. A house that has not been sold in that time may never have been registered at HM Land Registry. Its ownership then rests on the old paper deeds, and executors need them before they can sell. Registering it while the owner can still answer questions saves the family a search later.
