Funeral Directors in Bridlington: A Local Guide

A guide to funeral directors in Bridlington and East Yorkshire, independent and national, with plain advice on costs, help with paying, and what happens next.

By Aaron Johnson, Consultant Solicitor and TEP, a solicitor in Bridlington who writes every guide himself.

A kitchen table by a window with an envelope opened along the top and its letter half out, a stiff folded card standing open at blank ruled lines, a notebook of soft unreadable handwriting with three small empty boxes down the margin, a pen and a mug of tea.

When someone dies, choosing a funeral director is one of the first practical decisions. There is no rush. Most funeral directors answer the phone 24 hours a day and will guide you through the early steps. This guide covers the funeral directors serving Bridlington and East Yorkshire, what a funeral costs, help with paying, and what happens next.

What to look for when choosing a funeral director

Some practical questions to ask:

  • Are they a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) or the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF)?
  • Have they shown you their standardised price list? Funeral directors have had to display one since 2021, under Competition and Markets Authority rules.
  • Can they meet your cultural or religious requirements?
  • Are they available 24 hours a day?
  • Will they handle the paperwork for you?
  • Do they offer options to suit different budgets?

A good funeral director will not rush or pressure you, will explain costs up front and will give you time to think.

Help with funeral costs

If you are worried about paying for a funeral, there are several sources of help:

  • Funeral Expenses Payment from the DWP. If you or your partner receive a qualifying benefit, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, you may be able to claim help with funeral costs. Check the rules on GOV.UK.
  • Pre-paid funeral plans. If the deceased had a plan, it may cover some or all of the cost. Check their paperwork carefully.
  • Employer and trade union benefits. Some employers and trade unions pay death-in-service benefits or contribute to funeral costs.
  • Life insurance. Check whether the deceased had any policy that could help cover the cost.

Pre-paid funeral plans

A pre-paid plan lets you arrange and pay for your funeral in advance, usually at current prices. Since 29 July 2022, funeral plan providers must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which gives much stronger protection than before.

You fix most of the cost, spare your family the bill, and set out your wishes in advance. Check what the plan covers: some exclude third-party costs such as a burial plot. Many funeral directors offer their own plans, or you can use a separate provider.

What happens after the funeral

After the funeral, attention turns to administering the estate. That may mean applying for a grant of probate, valuing the assets, settling debts, and distributing the estate to the beneficiaries named in the will, or under the intestacy rules if there is no will.

A solicitor can handle the full administration, or simply guide you through the paperwork.

Every fee for this work, what happens in order and how a home visit is arranged are on Aaron’s page as a probate solicitor in Bridlington.

Questions

Questions people ask about this.

General answers for England and Wales. What applies to you depends on your circumstances.

How much does a funeral cost in Bridlington?

Funeral costs in Bridlington are broadly in line with national figures. SunLife's 2026 Cost of Dying report puts a simple attended cremation at around £3,500 and a simple attended burial at around £4,750, with the burial plot and the choices you make moving the figure up or down.

Can you pay funeral costs from the deceased's bank account?

Yes. Reasonable funeral costs are paid from the estate before other debts. Most banks will release money for the funeral on seeing the funeral director's invoice and the death certificate, before probate is granted.

Do I have to use a funeral director?

No. There is no legal requirement to use a funeral director. Most families do, because funeral directors handle the practicalities: collecting the person who has died, the paperwork, and liaising with the crematorium or cemetery.

How long after death is the funeral?

Often two to three weeks in England and Wales, though it varies. The death must be registered first, and the registrar issues the green form needed for a burial or cremation.
